Event Celebrating 20 Year Anniversary of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at the College

A gala event to celebrate the 20th anniversary since the launch of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at the College was held on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 in the College Theater.

In his address, Mr. Alexandros K. Samaras, President of HAEF’s BoD, noted, among other things, that: “The IB was introduced at the College 20 years ago.  It was something novel, something different, in terms of content, structure and teaching methodology.  At the same time, however, this new, this different, this “global” program, was embraced and integrated with all that constitutes the distinct “physiognomy” of our School:  its principles and values, its institutions, its educational – pedagogical – social philosophy, and its traditions.  The IB Programme was launched at the College in 1996 with 38 students, 15 teachers and 14 course offerings.  Today, 20 years later, it encompasses 295 students, 80 teachers and 21 course offerings.  And its evolution is not only quantitative, but primarily qualitative!  This is clearly reflected in the results of the IB Programme graduates, as witnessed in their admissions to US, UK and other Western European universities which, for the most part, are amongst the most competitive.  Equally, it is palpable by the national and international distinctions earned by our IB students – together with those of their peers in the Athens College and Psychico College General High Schools: distinctions across academic, cultural, social and athletic domains.  All these accomplishments are a “reflection” of the work of our teachers, the Administration and – with regard to the IB – all the actors in this 20-year venture – achievement.”

Following Mr. Samaras, Mr. Charalampos Vellis, former President of HAEF’s BoD (1989-2003), greeted the audience and spoke about the preparation and deliberation that went into the IB’s integration into the College, as well as about the Programmes’ beginnings, its organization and its first steps at our School.

Mr. Dionysios Tselentis, Co-Director of Athens College and High School Director, gave an account of the first four years of the IB’s operation, when the Programme was administered by Athens College.

Mr. Apostolos Athanasopoulos, Coordinator of the Psychico College School Units and High School Director, linked the College’s Mission Statement with that of the IB Organization and the characteristics of a College student with the IB Learner Profile.  He also emphasized the numerical and qualitative indicators that attest to the successful integration of the IBDP at the College.  A video message from Mr. Adrian Kearney, Director of IB World Schools, was also shown.

Following the greetings, Ms. Sophia Arditzoglou, IBDP Coordinator, gave a brief introduction that included presentations of the six IBDP course groups (Modern Greek, English, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and the Arts), as well as the Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and the CAS (Creativity-Activity-Service) programme.

These particularly creative and original presentations underscored school life at the College, fancifully imprinted students’ views about benefits derived from the IB Programme, and by way of audiovisual material gave a comprehensive picture of the IBDP at the College.

The event concluded with a musical program in which alumnus Natalia-Eleni Tsalli ′10 performed, accompanied by a six-member orchestra of music teachers from the College and the Conservatory.

The gala was rounded out by an exhibition of IBDP students’ artwork on display in the College foyer.
