History and Social Studies

The Department of History and Social Studies encompasses faculty members who teach the following subjects:

  • Junior High School: Religion, History, Socio-Political Studies
  • High School: Religion, History, Principles of Economic Theory, Justice and Politics, Principles of Philosophy, Sociology, Principles of Business Management and Administration, European Civilization and its Roots, Art History, Psychology

The purpose of the History and Social Studies Department

To provide students with knowledge and skills required to meet the demands of contemporary society, as well as those of future ones.

To help students formulate a personal, but critically-grounded, view of life and the role they are expected to play in society.

To lead students to develop historical thinking and historical consciousness in order to become responsible and conscientious citizens.

Objectives of the History and Social Studies Department

The vertical (Elementary School – Junior High School – High School) and horizontal (all sections of each grade) coordination of courses.

The interdisciplinary approach as it regards the delivery of course content and collaboration amongst faculty members.

Reflection on modern teaching requirements and implementation of new and appropriate didactic approaches.

Implementation of the State curriculum, enriched with activities and teaching materials.

Development of pilot programs.

The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)

Guiding and mentoring students in research projects.

Teacher training.

In order to achieve these objectives:

During regular meetings

- coordination of the curriculum takes place

- teaching materials are planned and prepared

- additional activities are scheduled

- reflection takes place

- pilot teaching methods and programs are prepared

- faculty members assess the progress of the courses and make recommendations to the Administration
