International Distinction for Sustainable Architecture

The Hellenic-American Educational Foundation’s (Athens College – Psychico College) “Ioannis M. Karras” Kindergarten is the first building in Greece awarded with the internationally acclaimed Platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design).  Moreover, it is the first school building in the world (outside the United States) to have received the highest recognition of excellence granted by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Its architectural design, as well as the supervision of its construction, was provided pro-bono by Alexandros K. Samaras and his associates to the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation.  It constitutes a model of sustainable architecture and construction, as evidenced by the conferment of the Platinum LEED award.

The construction of HAEF’s Kindergarten, inaugurated on September 8, 2014 on the Psychico campus, was made possible through the donation of Fotini Livanos and Alexandra Voureka-Petala in memory of their father, Ioannis M. Karras, an Athens College alumnus and major donor.
