The IB Building

On Wednesday, March 22, 2017, the 20th anniversary of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) at the College was held at the College Theater.

In the greeting, Mr. Alexandros K. Samaras, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic American Educational Foundation (HAEF), said: "IB joined the College 20 years ago. It was something new, something different, in terms of its content, structure, and method of teaching. At the same time, however, here at the College, this new, different, "international" approach was grafted by what composes the distinct "physiognomy" of our School: its principles and values, its institutions, its educational-pedagogical-social philosophy, its tradition. The IB at the College began in 1996 with 38 students, 15 teachers and 14 lessons in its program. Today, 20 years later, it caters to 295 students, with the support of 80 teachers and 21 lessons. And the evolution is not only quantitative - it is primarily qualitative! This is clearly reflected in the results of IB graduates with regard to admissions to US, UK and other Western European Universities - top Universities for the most part! But also in relation to the national and international distinctions of the students of our IBDP - along with their classmates of the General Lyceum of Athens College and Psychico College - covering academic, cultural, social, and sports areas. All these distinctions are a "mirroring" of the work of our teachers, the Directorate, and, as far as IB is concerned, all the contributors to this 20-year venture-achievement."

Mr. Charalambos Vellis, former Chairman of the Board of Directors at HAEF (1989-2003), spoke about the preparation for and the study of the integration IBDP at the College, as well as about the start, organization and first steps of the Program in our School.

Mr. Dionysios Tselentis, Co-Director and Head of Lyceum of Athens College, referred to the first four years of operation of the IBDP, when the Program was incorporated in Athens College.

Mr. Apostolos Athanasopoulos, School Coordinator and Psychico High School Director, linked the College Mission Statement with the corresponding mission of the IB Organization and the characteristics of the student at the College with the IB Learner Profile. At the same time, he highlighted the numerical and qualitative indicators of the successful integration of the IBDP at the College. A video message from Andrian Kearney, Director of IB World Schools, was also presented.

Ms. Sophia Arditzoglou, IBDP Coordinator, made a brief introduction to the event, which included presentations of the six IBDP Subject Areas (Modern Greek, English, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, The Arts) and the core elements (Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Creativity-Activity-Service (CAS)).

The presentations that followed were characterized by particular creativity and originality, dramatic scenes from school life that reflected students' views. Benefits that students reaped from the IB Diploma Program were accompanied by audiovisual material that helped the audience formulate an overall picture of the IBDP at the College.

The event closed with a musical program, that featured Natalia-Eleni Tsalli, 2010 IBDP alumnus, who was accompanied by a six-member orchestra of music teachers of the College and the Conservatory. The festive event was framed by an exhibition of the artwork of IBDP students at the Theater foyer. The presentations of student at the event can be viewed in the links below:
