THE DELTA SPEECH PRIZE COMPETITION
Origin of the Competition
In 1933 the annual Delta Prize Speech
Competition for the best oration in English by a graduating student
was established in recognition of the outstanding service of the
“Father of the College” Stephanos Delta.
The Three Stages of the Competition
The Delta Prize Speech Competition has three
stages, followed by both Athens College and Psychico College.
However, each College conducts the three stages according to a
separate timetable.
First, all graduating students write the text of an original
oratory. Students are given five words, one of which they must use
to create a title for their speech. (The five words are different
for Athens College and Psychico College.) Next, the Lykeio English
faculty selects ten speeches to be delivered before a panel of
judges in the semi-finals.
Five speeches (unless there is a tie, in which case there
will be six speeches) are selected to proceed to the finals, which
are judged by a panel of specially invited judges from outside the
College. The finals take
place before the student body of the Lykeio.
The winning speeches of Athens College and Psychico College
students are delivered at Commencement.
