Meeting the Needs of All Our Students
Meeting the needs of all of
our students is a prime goal of the Inter-School
English Department. In the six school units of Athens College
and Psychico College, the approach is identical; that is, students
are placed in one of three broad groups of language learners (ENL,
ESL, and EFL). These terms are explained below.
While the students placed in
each broad group are the same
kind of language learners, as individuals their language
abilities show some diversity. For example, students who fully meet
the expectation of their academic program as regards writing
may still be developing their oral skills and vice versa.
Similarly, students who are highly competent in grammar may be
challenged when they are asked to produce a well-structured and
engaging piece of writing.
As part of the process of meeting our students’ needs as language
learners, we periodically assess students for a change of placement.
For example, a student placed
in an EFL program may, in the light of teacher recommendations,
departmental discussions, and
appropriate assessment, be moved to an ESL program
