THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Every year
ten Fellowships are awarded to recent graduates from universities in
the United States.
The Fellows are chosen to act as young ambassadors,
strengthening the ties between the Foundation and the United States,
and providing a cross-cultural educational experience.
The role of the Fellows includes infusing their culture,
enthusiasm, ideas, language and knowledge into our school community.
In a very real sense they serve as role models for our
students.
Fellows are
given the opportunity to teach in supervised English classes and/or
work in the HAEF University Applications and Counseling Office and
HAEF Library and become involved in areas which include school
publications, the Forensics Club, theater productions, computer
labs, library research, sports, music, remedial education, student
organizations, and assisting individual teachers at various levels.
Fellows also help run part
of the Summer School Program in June-July.
Outside
school hours, the Fellowship affords ample time and opportunity to
explore Greece.
Past Fellows have complemented school responsibilities with
travel and cultural exploration.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are
looking for enthusiastic, out-going individuals with a wide spectrum
of personal strengths and interests.
The Fellowship is open to graduating seniors and recent
graduates (the age limit at the time of application is 26) with a
record of academic excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate
level. Majors in
Education and English literature and language (including TESOL /
TEFL) are preferred but not required. Applicants should be
open-minded and adaptable to best enjoy the experience and
challenges of living abroad.
They should be highly motivated, flexible, willing to work on
a number of different projects at the same time, and possess a
relatively active lifestyle.
Past endeavors should reflect a desire to work with children
and teenagers, and some teaching experience and/or experience in
college counseling and admissions will be favored.
Knowledge of Modern Greek is
also helpful but not required.
WORK SCHEDULE AND BENEFITS
The
fellowships begin on September 1 and ends on July 15 of the
following calendar year.
Fellows normally hold a full teaching load and are also involved in
related and extra-curricular activities.
There are two two-week vacation periods – one at Christmas
and one during Greek Orthodox Easter.
While in Greece, Fellows
are expected to attend a
Modern Greek course offered by the Adult Education Program where
they may also take other courses of interest to them. These courses
are free of charge for Fellows.
The program
pays a monthly stipend for the duration of the Fellowship and
provides a comprehensive private healthcare package covering 80% of
total medical costs. It also
provides housing on the 45-acre Psychico Campus, located in a
pleasant suburban setting which overlooks Athens, as well as in two
off-campus apartments located near by.
Each fellow has a separate bedroom but all share the
bathrooms, kitchen and living room.
The house has a computer with printer and internet connection
as well as a washer and dryer.
Lunches are provided at the school during school days.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Interested
applicants should fill in the requisite application form and send a
cover letter and resume, a page-long personal statement revealing
the strengths they offer the institution and what they expect to
gain from their experience in Greece, two letters of recommendation,
and official college transcripts.
Application and questions about the program should be
