During the summer (for approximately one month) the schools are closed; thus, parents and students may contact the school Administration Office one day a week to be determined by the 2nd Secondary Education Directorate.

Absences

Regular school attendance is mandatory for a satisfactory academic performance. However, in the event that a student is unable to attend school, he or she should be aware of the following:

  • For each teaching period one absence is recorded.
  • Absences may be excused by submitting to the Administration Office a note signed by a physician or by the student’s parents.  Parents and guardians can excuse students’ absences only for up to ten (10) days total for the entire school year, whereas they cannot excuse absences of more than two consequent days.
  • Individual school period absences may be excused only in the event of a medical emergency, as long as a medical note is submitted subject to approval by the Principal.  Under no circumstances are absences occurring over one or more school periods considered excused without the Principal’s permission.
  • Absences due to disciplinary offences and actions (suspensions, tardiness) cannot be excused under any circumstance.
  • The student’s guardian is fully responsible for the student’s regular school attendance. Parents and guardians are notified for students’ absences by the School, in person, over the phone, or by registered mail when deemed necessary by the Principal and the teacher responsible for student attendance and when the student exceeds 30 excused or unexcused absences. Additionally, parents and guardians are expected to visit the school within the first ten days of each month to receive a detailed students’ attendance report. Students may enquire about their absences to either the Teacher-Advisor of their section or the school’s Administrative officer.

Types of Absences

Student absences occurring for various reasons may be classified into three categories, which are treated differently by the State and by our School.
These categories are:

1.  Unrecorded absences
Student absences not recorded, i.e. not noted in the school’s official attendance record and, as such, not listed in the student’s report at the end of the school year.

Unrecorded absences may:
a.  occur due to student participation in special school activities and events as determined by qualified authorities, the school Principal or by decision of the Faculty Association (e.g. an educational excursion within Greece or abroad, school celebrations and events, athletic events).
b.  occur due to students’ observance of religious events held on dates specified by the appropriate holiday calendar.
c.  be related to student transferring to/from another school.
d. occur due to excuse from specific courses in accordance with relevant school provisions.

2. Excused absences
These absences occur on serious and reasonable grounds and are subject to favorable treatment by the State, without any disciplinary consequences even if the student has incurred a number of them.
Absences may be excused in case of:
a.  serious family reasons or student illness, confirmed by the student’s parent or guardian in accordance with relevant school provisions.
b.  student illness, confirmed in writing by a public or private medical institution or physician.

Relevant documentation submitted is not considered binding, as the Faculty Association is responsible for the final classification of absences as excused, or not, when there is qualifying and sufficient documentation of the reasons for a student’s absence.
c.  Serious medical conditions requiring special treatment or travel abroad, if time absent does not exceed the limits imposed by school legislation.

3.  Unexcused absences
These are any absences that cannot be classified as unrecorded or excused based on the criteria aforementioned.
Unexcused are, for example, any absences occurring due to an hourly or one-day suspension, an illness or serious family reasons for which the guardian does not submit an official excuse.
Additionally, unexcused absences due to unauthorized student non-participation or removal and/or tardy arrival for classes or scheduled school events and activities are considered unauthorized and subject students to disciplinary measures and severe penalties.

School Attendance Termination

Termination of school attendance occurs:

* Upon graduation
* Prior to graduation:
- Upon receipt of an application for transfer to another school (upon request by a student’s parents or upon recommendation by the Faculty Association and Administration).
- As per decision taken by the Faculty Association in accordance with relevant educational legislation.

Medical Office

Medical offices staffed by a pediatrician and nurses are maintained at the Tsolainio Hall and the Benaki Hall. The nurses are available at the infirmary during school hours providing first aid in case of an emergency.

At the beginning of each school year, parents must submit all medical assessments/notes required by law and by the College.  Enquiries may be made to the Administration Office.

Medical Assessment Prior to Participation in Physical Education

The Ministry of Education considers mandatory the submission of a medical assessment form prior to the participation of all students in Physical Education classes and other athletic activities.  Parents must request this form from their family physician.
Medical assessments and student medical records are to be given to the Teachers-Advisors.  If students have not submitted a medical assessment form by the end of September, they are not eligible for participation in Physical Education classes and will be recorded as absent

Field Trips and Excursions

Throughout the school year, approximately four field trips and a full-day excursion take place.  These are scheduled and approved by the Faculty Association at the beginning of the school year.  These trips are selected in order to serve specific educational, pedagogical, aesthetic, environmental or humanistic purposes.  Field trips, in particular, are considered a learning and pedagogical tool and are therefore complemented by various preliminary, creative and research activities before and during the trips and a follow-up evaluation.
