Student Community

The Student Community is comprised of all the students in a grade, or all the students in the various sections of a grade.  Student Communities are entities that promote democratic practices at the School and stimulate students’ initiatives, exploration and creativity.  They safeguard the free circulation of ideas and freedom of speech, ensuring through democratic procedures the unconstrained development of each student’s personality and his/her ability to formulate opinions about student issues.  Concurrently, Student Communities, through their elected delegates on Student Councils, propose solutions to school issues by bringing them to the Faculty and Administration.  Additionally, they are responsible for the enforcement of School Life Regulations (ie. cleanliness and maintenance of school premises and teaching materials, proper student attire, etc).  Pending the final approval of the Administration and the Faculty, Student Councils take the initiative and organize cultural and social events as well as athletic competitions.

 Organization/Structure of the Student Community

The High School Student Community is organized as follows:
a)
The General Assembly
b)
The fifteen-member Student Council
c)
The five-member Class Board

The General Assembly is the highest governing body of the Student Community in which all students partake equally.  It meets regularly three times per year and may be called to meet on an extraordinary occasion further to a petition to the Student Council by 2/3 of the members of the Student Community.

General Assembly meetings are scheduled by the Student Council in collaboration with the Faculty and the Administration in order to discuss and decide upon issues concerning the Student Community. Decisions are reached in an open voting session and require a majority vote by a quorum.  They are binding for all members of the Student Community.

General Assembly quorums are reached with the presence of 2/3 of the students.  During the first General Assembly of the academic year, the Student Council, which is the coordinating body of the Student Community, is elected in a closed voting session.  Ballot counting is conducted on the spot.  All students have the right to nominate themselves or others.  The responsibilities of the Student Council are:

a) Coordination of the operation of the Student Community.
b)
Student representation in conjunction with the other bodies of the Student Community.
c)
Promotion of decisions reached in the General Assembly to the executing bodies of the Student Community.

The election of Student Council members as well as their administration and operating policies are outlined in the Student Community Operation Regulations/1986 (articles 31-37).

The five-member Class Board is elected in a closed voting session that takes place in each grade section.  All students have the right to nominate themselves or others.

The responsibility of the Class Board is the coordination of the student activities of that section.

The election of Class Board members and their operating policies are outlined in the Student Community Operation Regulations/1986 (articles 13-23).
