FORENSICS

Forensics is one of HAEF’s most popular extracurricular activities. A long-standing tradition at Athens College Psychico College, the Forensics program engages students in the art of public speaking through participation in the following six events:

With so many events to choose from, Forensics has something for everyone. The Forensics season runs from October through March at which time members of the Forensics Team compete in the annual Panhellenic Forensics Tournament.

DEBATE
Debate is an event where a team of three competitors argue for or against a current controversial issue. The debater’s aim is to convincingly support his or her proposition with valid arguments and to counter the arguments of the other side.

Throughout the course of the Forensics season, debaters have the opportunity to participate in invitational debate tournaments, and the annual Panhellenic Forensics Debate Tournament.

Exceptionally talented and experienced debaters, selected by HAEF’s debate coaches, have the opportunity to try out for the National World Schools Debating Team that represents Greece in the annual World Schools Debating Championships -- a prestigious international event which take place in a different country each year.

DUET ACTING
In this highly competitive event, two performers act out a short comic or dramatic scene. The actors’ objective is to perform a well-balanced scene with effective interaction between the two players. Duet acting is not meant to be a formal stage production. The performers may use two chairs in their performance, but no other props are allowed.

GROUP DISCUSSION

In Group Discussion, students work together to find solutions to contemporary problems using appropriate conversational techniques. Through the course of the discussion, participants must demonstrate clear thinking, effective communication and cooperative skills, and sensitivity to the views of others.

IMPROMPTU SPEAKING

Impromptu speaking is a challenging event where quick, organized, and creative thinking is a must. In this event, participants are given a choice of three topics: a word, an incomplete sentence, and a quotation. They have thirty seconds to select a topic, then one additional minute to organize their thoughts. After that, they must give a 3 minute speech on their topic of choice.

ORAL INTERPRETATION OF LITERATURE
In this event, the participant reads a selection of literature, either comic or dramatic, aloud and through the use of voice and body effectively communicates the piece’s intellectual and emotional content to an audience.

OROGINAL ORATORY
Original Oratory is an event where the participant writes a speech on a topic of his or her choice. The speech must be 6-9 minutes long, memorized, and delivered in front of an audience. The orator’s goal is to persuade the listener of his or her point of view.
