Psychico College at a “Speak Truth to Power” Event

The two-year, world-class educational program “Speak Truth to Power,” funded by the Robert Francis Kennedy Human Rights Center and operated in Greece under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic and the Marianna V. Vardinoyannis Foundation, was implemented by Psychico College in academic year 2017-2018.

During these two years, the School instigated a variety of academic and extra-curricular activities that afforded it an opportunity to enter into partnerships with public and private schools.  Within this realm, Psychico College had the great honor of being invited by Othisi School to participate in a special event, titled “A Dialogue on Human Rights,” held in the Old Parliament House on Sunday, April 14, 2019.

College students participated at this event by presenting rhetorical essays they wrote, inspired by John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s dictum: “A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers.” As a run-up to the aforementioned, Psychico College High School and Psychico College Junior High held in-house rhetorical competitions in which 4 students distinguished themselves, 2 from each school unit.  Those students were: Sofronia-Efrosyni Voudouri (JHS gr 8), Charikleia Moraitaki (JHS gr 9), Vasiliki Marmaridou (HS gr 11) and Paressa Marmaridou (HS gr 11).

Our students delivered their rhetorical essays with remarkable aplomb and success.  The College was also represented at the event by Ms. Anatastasia Papakostopoulou, Director of Psychico College High School, and Mr. Panagiotis Giannoulatos, Director of Psychico College Junior High.  On the occasion, a greeting-message by College President, Mr. Richard Jackson, was read aloud.

Accompanying the students was Mr. Iordanis Papadopoulos, teacher-philologist at Psychico College and head of the educational program “Speak Truth to Power,” who coached them prior to the event.

Within the framework of the Program, Mr. Papadopoulos, representing Psychico College, went on a humanitarian journey to remote Kastelorizo together with NGO Axion Hellas which was realizing its 7th crossing to this distant island of Greece.  There, he presented the educational program “Speak Truth to Power” to the local school children.

On this crossing, books were donated to the Kastelorizo School Library as well as to each student individually.  These books had been collected by the students of “John M. Carras” Kindergarten as part of their project “Books to Remote Islands.” Present on this mission was Kindergarten teacher and member of Axion Hellas, Ms. Theodora Vafeiadaki.
