Hellenic-Chinese Cultural Festival at the College

With the aim of adopting an extraversive character and tightening Hellenic-Chinese relations, the Chinese Language Department of HAEF’s Special Programs, together with the Parents Associations of the College’s respective school units, organized a Hellenic-Chinese Spring Cultural Festival.  The celebration was held on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 in Choremi Auditorium.

Students from schools in Hangzhou, China, wearing their country’s colorful, traditional costumes, presented various customs associated with Chinese culture, music, dance, martial arts, the art of tea, calligraphy and more.

Students from our School’s Chinese Department impressed the audience by reciting Constantine Cavafy’s poem “Ithaca” in Chinese

A particularly heartwarming moment was when the Chinese students played Manos Hadjidakis’ “Never on Sunday” (original Greek title “Ta Paidia tou Pirea”), which they had arranged for traditional Chinese instruments, and to which their Greek peers danced.

Mr. Shaobo Yang, editor of the newspaper “China Greece Times,” introduced the event.  From the Chinese mission, Mr. Hu Debin, Minister of the Unified Work Front in Hanghzou, and Ms. Ying Qiulin, President of the Hellenic-Chinese Cultural and Educational Center, gave greeting speeches.  On behalf of the College, President Richard L. Jackson and Athens College Co-Director and Coordinator the HAEF School Units, Mr. Apostolos Athanasopoulos spoke.

The Honorable Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Greece, Ms. Zhang Qiyue, accompanied by the Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission, Mr. Wang Qiang, and the Cultural Attaché, Mr. Wang Chao, honored the event with their presence.

Also in attendance was Mr. George Constantelis, parent of two College students, whose contribution was decisive to the creation in 2008 of the Chinese Program at the College. Today it constitutes the largest such program in a school in Greece.
