90th Annual Commencement Exercises

The 90th annual Commencement Exercises for academic year 2018-2019 were held in an atmosphere brimming with emotion and pride. Apart from the established rituals culminating in the conferral of diplomas, this year’s ceremony had special significance because, for the first time after many years, it welcomed a keynote speaker.

Award –winning, Greek-American author and internationally acclaimed journalist, Nicholas Gage, in an inspiring speech to our graduates, urged them to pursue their dreams and to strive to make the world better.  Drawing upon his personal journey, he noted that no material reward is a substitute for the power of love, something that they themselves will one day discover.

In his opening remarks, President Jackson congratulated the graduates on their accomplishments during their studies at the College.  He also made two announcements: the first regarding the establishment of two new Merit Scholarships for students entering Junior High School 7th grade, in memory of Michael Dertouzos (’54), pioneer MIT researcher and scientist, as well as Athens College alumnus. The second regarding a restricted fund in support of faculty professional development for two members of the School’s community.

This year, the President’s Award was bestowed upon Mr. Apostolos Doxiadis for his 40-year contribution as a member of the Hellenic-American Educational Foundation’s Association (Somateio), the last years of which were as a member of the Board of Directors.

Co-Director of Athens College and Coordinator of the HAEF School Units, Mr. Apostolos Athanasopoulos, introduced the Salutatorians and Valedictorians of its two schools and announced the winners of the Homer Davis, Howland, Delta, Alexander Petrellis-Perry, Dolasik, March 25th, Parents and Athletics Prizes for 2019.

Afterwards, Director of Athens College High School, Christos Konstantopoulos, and Director of Psychico College High School, Anastasia Papakostopoulou, gave warm, farewell speeches to the 2019 graduates.

The Ceremony continued with the conferral of degrees.  Congratulation to the class of 2019!

The College wishes its graduates much success in the future.
