Our Priorities

Support what you care most deeply about while meeting the College’s strategic goals and urgent needs. Although gifts of every size are welcome, these areas also support opportunities for special gifts that enable you to make a direct impact on the College’s initiatives.

See the descriptions below of some of these funds and why they’re important. Then designate your gift accordingly.

Annual Fund

Every gift supports our young scholars. Because the Annual Fund subsidizes the Financial Aid Program while also bridging the gap between tuition income and the real cost of educating our students.

Greece’s ongoing recession has put great pressure on many of our students’ families. While committed to keeping tuition as affordable as possible, we also strive to help those students whose families are facing unexpected hardship. Close to 19% of our students were awarded partial, need-based tuition assistance last year. Although the average Financial Aid grant to a student was €4.900, gifts of all sizes are welcome as, collectively, they support this ongoing effort.

The Annual Fund opens on September 1 of each year and ends on August 31 the following year. Special naming opportunities are available to honor an individual or your family, or memorialize loved ones.

Support a Scholar

We believe scholarship support enriches the experience of every student. It allows us to create a more diverse community of learners who will open each other’s minds, test one another’s assumptions, and bridge understanding.

Through a gift to our Support A Scholar initiative, your philanthropy has an immediate effect. It will not only transform the lives of exceptionally promising children, but help all our students to become more empathetic citizens of the world.

Gifts of any size are welcome and will make a difference. Special naming opportunities are available to honor an individual or your family, or memorialize loved ones.

Here are some ways you may designate your gift to Support a Scholar.

Merit Scholarships

Our Merit Scholarship Program gives academically talented students with limited means the opportunity to study at Athens College. Selection criteria include top performance on the entrance examination at the Junior High, High School or IB Diploma level, as well as demonstrated financial need. This includes an interview with the candidate and family in their home. Students must meet academic and other standards to maintain their scholarship.

With your help, we aim to provide 40 fully funded Merit & Need-based Scholarships by 2021. While gifts of all sizes are welcome, new students are accepted into this program only when support for the duration of his/her career at the College is secured.

Although gifts of any size are welcome, naming opportunities are also available for commitments of annual or full scholarships. Donors may choose to name the scholarship in honor of their family, to memorialize a loved one, or to carry the name of a foundation or company.

Fulbright Fellow

Athens College is honored to host the largest Fulbright Fellowship program in Greece. Through this flagship educational exchange program, 13 recently graduated U.S. scholars are working closely this year with Athens College students across all age levels as mentors, coaches, role models and advisors. Through their close interaction with students and faculty, they help strengthen the College’s ties with the U.S., and often have a profound effect on individual students. The College stays in touch with hundreds of its alumni Fellows who have gone on to become advocates of the College in leadership positions around the globe.

While gifts of any size are welcomed to provide partial support of the Fellowship Program, you may make a gift to underwrite a Fulbright Fellow for one academic year for which the position will carry your name during that period. The named gift will cover the full costs to the College related to the Fellow’s transportation, housing and stipend.

Merit Awards

Through a new tradition, the College recognizes and encourages superior academic achievement midway through students’ careers. Merit awards are given to students in Grade 9 and Grade 11 performing at the very top of their class based on their cumulative grades of the past two years, as well their overall ethos and conduct. Students receive a certificate of achievement at an annual ceremony, and a symbolic monetary award that is applied to their tuition for the current academic year.

Inspired Teaching

Talented faculty are the heart of Athens College. Our goal is to attract, develop and retain inspiring teachers who will help students grow academically, socially, and personally. This requires significant investment to ensure we’re adapting to rapidly evolving best practices.

Help provide great teaching by supporting faculty professional development. These gifts encourage lifelong learning by enabling faculty and staff to attend seminars and conferences, pursue coursework and related research, and seize travel-study opportunities during the summer. You may designate gifts of any size toward this objective.

Excellence Beyond the Curriculum

The College inspires students to discover their talents and abilities, and enriches their lives beyond the classroom. This requires ongoing investment in equipment, resource materials and more that are beyond the annual budget. Here’s where you can invest in your passion by designating your gift for an area such as Arts, Athletics, STEM, or other special area of interest.

Our Libraries

The College libraries are a unique asset. They’re the heart of the College’s focus on project-based learning. They are exciting centers where students of every age learn to research and apply critical thinking skills to develop original work, and come to their own conclusions about the world.

Your gift to the Libraries supports information technology, electronic subscriptions, books, internship stipends and the many needs that make a good library a great one.
