Summertime in the Library

What goes on in the Library at the end of the year when classes are over?

Καλοκαίρι στη Βιβλιοθήκη

A lot, because there are many tasks for which there is no time during the winter.

First and foremost, all the work and projects that were completed during the previous year are reviewed.  And organizing the agenda for the upcoming year begins.  Preparations are underway for research projects and other matters, and consideration is given as to whether new books and audiovisual material will be needed.

Books, periodicals and other materials are properly shelved, based on their classification.  For this task, we are assisted by students from the College who have enrolled in the Career Counseling’s Summer Internship Program and who, literally, “put their shoulders to the wheel!”

Orders are placed for new books, and online magazine and database subscriptions are renewed.

The 1,000 or so books donated to the Library over the course of this past year are evaluated in order to determine whether they will be added to the Library’s collections.

This is followed by cataloguing; that is, adding a bibliographic description and subject analysis in the Library’s electronic catalogue. The process is not only for the books that were acquired during the year, but also retroactively for all books that existed before the online catalogue was initiated.

Maintenance is performed on the hardware and software of all computers (130 desktop and laptop computers is no small number….).

And all this must be accomplished in a steady and coordinated fashion, not at a snail’s (nor the Campus tortoise’s) pace!

Not a minute can be wasted in order for everything to be ready for the new academic year.
