Gala of Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS)

Our Elina Makridi,
librarian at the Athens College – Psychico College Main Library and marathon runner, at the Gala of the Association of International Marathon and Distance Races.

During the 2nd Annual Gala of the Association of International Marathon and Distance Races (AIMS), held on Friday, November 7th at the Athens College Theater, Elina Makridi, Athens College – Psychico College librarian and mother of two children, was honored for her long contribution to running races.  Elina who ran her first marathon at the age of 18, wearing the colors of SAKA, now has 17 marathon races under her belt, the most recent being the Frankfurt Marathon on October 26, 2014.   Her performance of 3 hours 21 minutes once again ranked her among the top 25 Greek women marathoners for 2014.  On the evening of the Gala she rose to the podium, a representative of all women runners, and gave a brief speech in which she highlighted their struggles and conquests.

Elina’s speech on the evening of the Gala:

“On behalf of all the women runners who will never break a world record and will never appear on the lists of the elite runners, I would like to thank you for this great honor. Because for us, it’s not simply the recognition of our personal efforts to go beyond our limits.  It’s the recognition that we, women of all ages and all nationalities, besides being mothers, wives, hard working professionals and housekeepers, we can also be athletes and be acknowledged and respected for that. From Stamatina Revithi, the very first woman who attempted to run a marathon at the Olympic Games of 1896, and was prohibited on the basis of her gender, to Kathrine Switzer who in 1967 succeeded in running the Boston Marathon with a numbered entry despite the organizer’s opposition, till now, women runners have come a long way. And today International Associations like AIMS, National Federations like SEGAS, Schools like Athens College, sports clubs and awards like this, all support and encourage women athletes to go even further. So women don’t hesitate and come join us in this wonderful, exciting and all-embracing world of running. Thank you so much!”
