Athenian Book Itineraries

Athens Culture Net in collaboration with Greek Publishing Houses and with the support of O.S.D.E.L. creates a series of Athenian Book Itineraries, designed by taking as a reference a favorite book and/or following a writer's trace through Athens and through his/her texts.

Nineteen (19) different walking tours invite Athenians and visitors to re-discover the city and its secrets through books!  Writers, book professionals and literary scientists will guide the participants through the neighborhoods of Athens showing them the hidden treasures of the city (historical and literary landmarks, cafes, bookstores and publishing houses, among others) and the places from which writers -of the past and present- drew their inspiration, highlighting the influence of the urban scene, culture and lifestyle.

The first walking tour took place on Saturday, October 19th, 13:30-14:30 and was inspired by the first book published by Menis Koumandaras in 1962, “The Motorcycles,” recently re-issued by Patakis editions.  Along the route, student actors of the “Delos” – Dimitra Chatoutsis Drama School intervened with readings of excerpts from the book, which recounts the impasses the young Anastasis experiences and his futile struggle to find a job.

Upcoming itinerary is on November 30, 2019
Journalist and writer Panos Amyras invite us to discover the streets of Athens through the eyes of his heroes from his books "The Famine" and "The Ransom", set during  the German Occupation of Athens.
