“Solon Karydakis” Pedestrian Bridge Clean-Up

As part of the MYP Service in Action Programme, on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, a team of Athens College Junior High School 7th graders, together with representatives of Athens College High School’s 15-member Student Council, voluntarily undertook the cleaning of the Pedestrian Bridge located at the intersection of Kifissias Avenue and the street leading to the College.

In undertaking this activity, a collaboration with the Attica Regional Council, the students paid tribute to the memory of our student, Solon Karydakis, who unfairly lost his life ten years ago while trying to cross Kifissia Avenue at this intersection.

It was December 11, 2009 when our School’s Student Councils staged a large protest and occupation of Kifissias Avenue, demanding that a pedestrian bridge be erected to protect all street crossers.

Athens College High School students, in collaboration with Attica Region responsible for the maintenance of this project, proceeded with the clean-up to highlight the functional importance of the pedestrian bridge, not only for themselves but for the whole locality.  At the same time, they hoped to inspire everyone to pay the owed respect to this space.

Standing alongside the students were the parents of the late Solon Karydakis, who spoke about the importance of Driving and Road Safety Education.

Representing Attica Region were Ms. Loukia Kefalogianni, Deputy Regional Governor of North Athens, and Ms. Eleni Belgaki, Head of the General Directorate of Infrastructure Development Planning and Engineers.  Both of them briefed the students on the Regional Council’s efforts to maintain the project’s material-technological equipment in perfect condition and expressed hope that the students’ initiative would serve as a point of reference for other pedestrian bridges in the city.
