Special Olympics and Psychico College IBDP: Creating a World Open to All

A hugely successful event, co-organized by Special Olympics Hellas and Psychico College International Baccalaureate’s CAS program, was held on Thursday, March 14, 2019, in the IC Hall (Alexandra Martinou Building).

Representatives of the International Baccalaureate’s Year1 five-member Student Councils had an opportunity to meet with Special Olympic Hellas athletes (Greek Youth Circle) and to engage with them in an open dialogue about issues of diversity and acceptance in schools. The conclusions of this discussion will be announced at the 2019 Youth Global Leadership Summit (March 14-18, 2019) in which Psychico College will represent Greece.  During the summit, which will be held within the framework of the Summer Special Olympics 2019 in Abu Dhabi, participants will discuss ways in which young people can create a world that does not exclude anyone, a world open to all.

The Director of Psychico College High School, Ms. Anastasia Papakostopoulou, welcomed the Special Olympics athletes and prefaced the event, whilst the Sports Directors of Special Olympics Hellas, Mr. Vasilis Kasimatis, moderated the student-athlete discussion.  Escorting the athletes were Ms. Eirini Trompeta, Coordinator of Bocce  (ball sport) and Ms. Alexandra Vougioka, Coordinator of the Unified Schools Program of Special Olympics Hellas.  On behalf of Psychico College, organizers of the event were the Coordinators of the Creativity-Activity-Service (CAS) program, Ms. Stella Tsali and Ms. Jennifer Potter, Deputy IB Coordiantor, Ms. Giota Maragkou, and Head of Year 1, Ms. Eleni Tzarou.

Most impressive was the rapport and communication that was quickly established between our students and the Special Olympics athletes.  The ensuing discussion sensitized and motivated the student audience to take positions, to intervene and to ask questions.

The event ended with an agreement to continue our collaboration through joint activities and sports in the near future.
