20th Anniversary of the IBDP at the College

A celebratory event marking the 20th anniversary of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) at the College was held on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 in the College Theater.

In his greeting, Mr. Alexandros K. Samaras, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic American Educational Foundation (HAEF), said: "The IB programme was launched at the College 20 years ago. It was something new, something different, in terms of content, structure, and teaching methodology. At the same time, however, here at the College, this new, different, "international" approach was grafted on to what makes up the distinct "physiognomy" of our School: its principles and values, its institutions, its educational-pedagogical-social philosophy, its traditions. When the IB first operated at the College in 1996, it began with 38 students, 15 teachers and 14 courses. Today, 20 years later, it caters to 295 students, with the support of 80 teachers in 21 subjects. Its evolution is not only quantitative - it is, above all, qualitative! This is clearly reflected in the results of IB graduates with regard to admissions to US, UK and other Western European institutions of higher learning - top tier universities for the most part!  But also as it regards national and international distinctions achieved by students of our IBDP, as well as those of their peers in the Athens College and Psychico College High Schools: distinctions that span a broad range of areas including academics, culture, civics and sports.  All these distinctions "mirror" the work of our teachers, the Administration, and, insofar as the IB, all the work of those who contributed to this 20-year venture-achievement."

Mr. Charalambos Vellis, former Chairman of the Board of Directors of HAEF (1989-2003), spoke about the preparation and research required to integrate the IBDP into the College programs, as well as about its start, organization and first steps at our School.

Mr. Dionysios Tselentis, Co-Director of Athens College and High School Director, referred to the first four years of operation of the IBDP, when the Program was incorporated in Athens College.

Mr. Apostolos Athanasopoulos, Coordinator of the Psychico College School Units and High School Director, highlighted the link between the College Mission Statement with the corresponding mission of the IB Organization and the characteristics of a College student with those of the IB Learner Profile. At the same time, he outlined the numerical and qualitative indicators of the successful integration of the IBDP at the College. A video message from Andrian Kearney, Director of IB World Schools, was also presented.

Ms. Sophia Arditzoglou, IBDP Coordinator, made a brief introduction to the event, which included presentations of the six IBDP Subject Areas (Modern Greek, English, Social Sciences, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, The Arts) and the core elements (Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay and Creativity-Activity-Service (CAS)).

The presentations that followed were characterized by particular creativity and originality, depicting scenes from school life which reflected students' views about the benefits that they have reaped from the IB Diploma Program.  The presentations were accompanied by audiovisual material that helped the audience formulate an overall picture of the IBDP at the College.

The event was brought to a close with a musical program that featured Natalia-Eleni Tsalli, 2010 IBDP alumnus, accompanied by a six-member orchestra comprised of College and Conservatory music teachers. The festive event was framed by an exhibition of IBDP students' artwork on display in the Theater foyer. To view students' presentations at the event, click on the links below:
